How to Choose Guardrails for a Rural Road

Choosing guardrails for a rural road involves balancing safety, cost, and environmental impact. The primary goal is to prevent vehicles from leaving the roadway in areas with steep embankments, deep ditches, or fixed obstacles like trees and utility poles.

The most common type is the W-beam guardrail (or thrie-beam for higher impact areas). This system is designed to deflect upon impact, absorbing energy and redirecting the vehicle back onto the road. Key selection factors include:

Traffic Volume and Speed: Higher speeds and volumes require more robust systems, often with deeper blockouts to prevent wheel snagging.

Post Material: Steel posts are strong but rigid; wood posts are cheaper and break away more easily on impact, which can be safer for motorcyclists.

End Treatments: The exposed ends of guardrails are extremely hazardous. Energy-absorbing end terminals are essential. They crumple or gate upon impact, significantly reducing the risk of impalement.

Placement: Install guardrails only where necessary, as they themselves are a fixed object. A professional road safety audit is recommended to identify high-risk locations.
